Global Data Alliance Applauds Announcement of Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework
WASHINGTON – March 25, 2022 – The Global Data Alliance applauds the United States and the European Union on today's announcement of a new Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework to strengthen data privacy and security, support responsible data transfers, and enable continued transatlantic commerce. The Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework is critical to a stable and resilient transatlantic relationship that reflects US and EU respect for privacy and human rights, while supporting economic opportunity for citizens on both sides of the Atlantic.
"We congratulate the US and EU negotiating teams on the agreement in principle announced today. A new Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework will bolster economic opportunity and data protection for citizens and workers on both sides of the Atlantic," said Joseph Whitlock, Executive Director at the Global Data Alliance. "Today’s announcement is very timely, as ongoing uncertainty regarding transatlantic data transfers not only jeopardizes transatlantic economic and technological leadership, but also transatlantic data privacy and security."
The new Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework is expected to replace the Privacy Shield Framework, which was struck down by the Court of Justice of the European Union in 2020. With the approval of a new successor framework, US and EU companies and workers in all sectors can have greater legal confidence in their ability to transfer data responsibly across the Atlantic. The Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework will also benefit millions of US and EU citizens, whose personal information will be subject to the data security and privacy controls required by the program.
