In its annual Special 301 filing today, BSA | The Software Alliance urged the US Government to work with its trading partners to remove market access barriers, which hamper the flow of data across borders, preventing US companies from providing essential services. The filing also stressed the need for the proper protection and enforcement of all forms of intellectual property. The international movement of data is crucial to helping US companies, including BSA members, continue innovating, creating American jobs, and driving the growth of the digital economy. Read more

Late today, the House of Representatives passed the Email Privacy Act of 2017 (H.R. 387). BSA | The Software Alliance thanks Reps. Kevin Yoder (R-KS), Jared Polis (D-CO), Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), and John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) for reintroducing the bill early in the year. This legislation would update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) to ensure that law enforcement agencies obtain a warrant before compelling access to our email and other stored electronic documents and files. BSA | The Software Alliance urges the House of Representatives to pass the Email Privacy Act of 2017 (H.R. 387), which is scheduled for consideration Monday. This legislation would update the three decades-old Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) to require that law enforcement obtain a warrant before accessing a person’s content stored in the cloud. BSA is encouraged that Congress is moving early in the year on this important privacy issue. Read more
